The Pros and Cons of a First Look at Your Wedding: A Photographer’s Perspective

There is no right or wrong, but there are things to take into consideration when deciding to do a wedding ‘first look’ or not.

A first look with the father of the bride

As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless “first look” moments, as well as the traditional walk down the aisle reveal. Brides often ask me which is better, and the truth is, it depends on what kind of wedding experience you’re dreaming of. While I’m here to guide you and make sure you have the best day possible, let’s break down the pros and cons of a first look, so you can make the decision that’s right for you.

Pros of a First Look

1. Intimate, Private Moment

A first look gives you and your partner the chance to share an intimate moment alone before the whirlwind of the ceremony. The emotion in these moments is raw and personal, and many couples cherish the privacy of experiencing this reveal together, without the eyes of hundreds of guests on them.

2. More Photos Before the Ceremony

Having a first look allows us to take a lot of your wedding portraits before the ceremony begins. This means more time for family and bridal party photos, and you get to enjoy your cocktail hour instead of spending it away from guests for photos!

3. Calming Pre-Ceremony Nerves

Seeing your partner before the ceremony can help calm any nerves. It can feel like the day is building up with so much anticipation, and having that moment together helps you relax and feel more present when it’s time to say your vows.

4. Better Lighting for Photos

Depending on your wedding schedule, the first look can give us access to the best natural light, especially if your ceremony is later in the day. Early afternoon light is often more flattering, and we can make the most of golden hour too if time allows.

Cons of a First Look

1. Breaking Tradition

If you’ve always dreamed of the moment when your partner sees you walking down the aisle for the first time, a first look might take away from that. Some couples feel like nothing compares to that traditional reveal in front of all their loved ones.

2. Time Management

While having a first look can free up some time after the ceremony, it does mean starting your day earlier. You’ll need to plan more time for hair, makeup, and getting dressed, which can make your morning a bit more rushed.

3. Less Emotional Aisle Moment

For some, the aisle moment still feels just as powerful even with a first look. But others may feel that the initial emotional impact is somewhat diluted by seeing each other beforehand. If you envision your partner being overwhelmed with emotion as you walk toward them, skipping the first look might preserve that raw reaction.

What’s Right for You?

There’s no right or wrong answer—it’s all about what feels right for you. Some brides love the privacy of a first look, while others want to stick to the excitement of the big aisle reveal. As your photographer, I’m here to guide you through either decision and make sure that, whatever you choose, we capture stunning, authentic moments that tell the story of your day.

At the end of the day, whether you do a first look or not, your wedding will be full of incredible memories. So take a moment to reflect on what feels most meaningful to you and your partner, and we’ll plan everything around that vision.
